  • PEMQBook Board Review Course 2019

When: January 25-27, 2019, which is ~2 months before the board certification examination

Where: Hilton Anatole in DALLAS, TX

For: ABP/ABEM Pediatrics Emergency Medicine Certification Examination on April 9, 2019 and the PEM Recertification Examination

    There were ~100 attendees

  • General Highlights:

    - The course lectures will be based on the participants' performance/need: all participants will be asked to complete Pack 1 of MED-Challenger Peds EM by November 1, 2018 in the electronic MED-Challenger Peds EM version. The results will be used to tailor the lectures specific to the attendees' needs.

    - Pack 1 is the online version of PEMQBook 2013, which was updated in 2017 after release of PEMQBook 2017, and is more similar to the board examination.

    - Pack 2 is available for purchase through Med-Challenger, but is not a requirement for the Board Review Course.

    - Lectures will be given by Editors and Authors from the PEMQBook series, as well as other board certified PEM attendings.

    - Pass or don't pay: your Med-Challenger and course fees will be refunded if you don't pass the Certification Examination or Recertification Examination in 2019.

    - The course is specific for physicians who have completed their PEM fellowship. Engage with colleagues from across the nation.

    - Beginning October 1, 2018 this combined course cost increases to $1699.

    - There are no discounts or memberships to join.

    - Because of our new hotel venue, we do not anticipate limiting the number of participants.

    - Each attendee will be given the course lectures via PowerPoint presentation in advance of the course, and will be encouraged to use their laptops during the conference.

  • Course Description/Plan of Study

    - Each attendee should begin their self-study by completing Pack 1 of MED-Challenger Peds EM via the Med-Challenger portal. Answer the questions, read the answer explanations, and read further on identified areas of need. Timeline: Now through November 1, 2018.

    - Complete the questions in test mode, rather than in practice mode (to record your performance).

    - There are ~1,000 questions, so pace yourself.

    - August 1, 2018: Begin registration for the ABP/ABEM Certification examination.

    - Complete Pack 1 by November 1, 2018.  If unable, focus on completing the chapters of highest value to you, so that we get these results.

    - Based on the attendees' collective scores (questions missed), the lecturers will tailor their lectures to these topics, while still covering general, important information.

    - Purchase of Pack 2 (online equivalent of PEMQBook 2017) is optional.

    - The color hardcover PEMQBook 2017 will be made available to attendees at the discounted rate of $110 including shipping. This will enable you to continue your exam preparation after you complete Pack 1. Complete 80% of Pack 1 to qualify for the discount.

    - Attend the Board Review Course in Dallas from January 25-27, 2019.

    - Pass the ABP/ABEM Board Examination on April 9, 2019!

  • Frequently Asked Questions

    Why are there no discounts?

    - It's simpler to have a single fee, via a single portal. Discounts usually result in costs distributed to others.  The price goes up October 1st since later registrations changes the complexity of our processes.

Are there limits for attendees this time?

    - We had ~70 attendees in 2015, and ~80 attendees in 2017. The last venue had a capacity of 80.

    - Our current venue has a maximum seating capacity of 165. We currently have 94 registered, so this is more than previous conferences, but there's still lots of space.

    - Therefore, we do not anticipate exceeding our limit. Per Dr. Okada, everything is bigger in Texas!

What is the new venue like?

    - The lecture hall has long tables with each seat facing the lecturer/screen with individual outlets and lights. It's similar to stadium seating, but with tables and regular chairs.

    - The lecture hall is within the Hilton Anatole, where we encourage you to stay.

    - The Hilton Anatole is a Hilton complex with a large Atrium, numerous restaurants, and lots of space. It is on the outskirts of Downtown Dallas, and is within visual distance of UT Southwestern Medical Center. It is 10 minutes from Dallas Love Field (Southwest Airlines Hub) and 20-25 minutes from Dallas/Fort Worth Aiport (American Airlines Hub).

    - Book your room early and ask for the discounted room rate for the course. Or click on the hotel links above to go directly to their site.

How did you use the feedback from the last course?

    - We are continuing the balance of didactic lectures, while still using the question and answer format to frame the course.

    - We are continuing the Pass or Don't Pay guarantee.

    - We have moved the venue to Dallas, TX, a more central location.

Is there CME or MOC credit available?

    - 53 Category 1 AMA or AAP credits are available through Med-Challenger. Approximately 30% are trauma CMEs.

    - 20 Points for ABP MOC Part 2 are available through Med-Challenger.

I already own the print version of PEMQBook 2013. Do I have to purchase the online Challenger version?

    - Yes. The course is based on this, and Med-Challenger sends us the data on your performance.

Can I share the subscription for Challenger?

    - No. Each participant will be required to register for themselves independently.

Do I need to buy Pack 2 or PEMQBook 2017?

    - No. We made this optional, since you may already own this. We are basing our course on your performance of Pack 1, which appears to be more similar to the board examination.

    - However, when you complete 80% of Pack 1, you are eligible to purchase the color hardcover PEMQBook 2017 at $110 (normal price is $160 for the same book, or $90+ for the black and white soft cover version), so if you don't own it, and want more question and answer sets, these are available.

    - PEMQBook 2017 is our best book, but feedback suggests that it is more challenging than the board examination.

  • Fellows Are Welcome!

Because we recognized the educational value of this course for fellows-in-training, we had secured a venue with expanded capacity. The course is designed for those taking the exam in 2019, but the course will improve your test taking ability and allow you to network with others from throughout the country.

    Fellows-in-training rate:

    1) $600 discounted attendance fee.

    2) The pass or don't pay guarantee does not apply.

    3) No need to purchase Challenger.

    4) Registration for fellows-in-training opens on October 1, 2018 to allow  those taking the test in 2019 first priority.

    5) Register directly with Calvin Lowe.
